I believe they say you have a choice of online submission or submission 
by snail mail.  The published book would be hard or softcopy 
(paperback).  You have more than one Publishing Program to choose.  It 
would seem that Barnes and Noble and iUniverse.com are really 
intermediaries for the actual Printing companies.

The clues are in those articles that the About.com site suggests you 
read.  Learn about what one does to Publish their own book.  You really 
do not need Barnes and Noble.  You just need a good printer company in 
your town or city that can print books for you.  Those About.com 
articles give advice and guidance on how to proceed.

You can go through programs like iUniverse, which will make things 
easier for you, but in the long run you'll pay more, I think.
