Hey everyone!
I have a Q! 3 Actually.. :o)
My Mother wants to try to publish one of her AWESOME books,
but wants to do it herself. I know there are self-publishing
companies out there, and I'd love a list if anyone knows any. Also,
is there a site that talks about the pros and cons of using a
publishing co versus self-publishing? ALSO... I was told that
Barnes & Noble has it's own publishing department. I looked briefly
for it, but only got links to their B&N Bookseller site. I'd love to find
that B&N Publishing site, as they would be her first choice, I'm
sure!

There are many POD publishers out there. That's what BN is. Or
rather that's what iUniverse.com is. POD is Print On Demand. This
means that a new book will be printed when an order is made. No
surpluses and no inventory (Unless your Mom wants to purchase a
few to have on hand).
There are also self-publishing houses but you really got to watch
out for those guys just out there to make a buck. Some are literally
fly-by-night organizations and will screw you over bigtime.
She may also want to look into electronic publishing. This is
basically the same as print publishing but you publish your book in
bytes and pixels rather than on paper. Since she's self-publishing,
a good place to go first is http://www.BookLocker.com. If she
needs help with graphics or getting the book into the correct format
for electronic publishing, contact the gal at
http://www.pubpromos.com. She does excellent work and the price
is right too.
My suggestion? Do your homework.
Another suggestion: Go over to http://www.writersweekly.com. On
that site Angela has some great how-to publish books. I would read
it, digest it, and read it again. She really has some good advice.
(no I'm not getting paid to say that <G>)
Another site that has some how-to books is on BookLocker.com
(which is run by the same person). I would browse through there
and see if one of those would offer the advice you need.
For information on electronic publishing, you can pick up a few
things at BookLocker...but for free information, check out
http://www.ebookconnections.com and http://www.ebooknet.com
I have a list of publishers on Just Views which is located at
http://www.justviews.com ... just click into the publisher listing. I
have them sorted (electronic, print, ezine, and vanity). Vanity is
basically the self-publishing houses. Some are good... others are
not.
There's also a self-publishing email list over at egroups.com. I'm
not sure of the exact name of the group though. However, if she (or
you) ask for information, you'll get it by the bucketfuls. Search for
Self Publishing, Self Publish, and Independent Publisher. As your
mom will find out, the self-published authors prefer being called
Independent Publishers <G>
Again, be careful in contracting with a vanity publisher. Some of
them really have sticky fingers and will fleece you but good.
Hope this helps....
