Over the past few years, I have spent a lot of time as a subcontractor to various engineering companies performing UXO (UneXploded Ordinance) surveys. Most of these surveys use GPS systems for positioning of the geophysical sensors. I spent a lot of time both collecting and processing data for these surveys. I began to wonder if I could build an inexpensive GPS system of my own for use on mining and hydrocarbon exploration surveys where the need for accuracy isnt so critical. Earlier this year, I built such a system using a small Garmin receiver and a handheld computer (PDA) to log the data. I have used this instrument successfully on a production survey and have tested it against a full differential survey grade instrument.
I have posted all of the information on the system configuration, difficulties I ran into along the way, and the results of the test on my web page, www.bigskygeo.com for anyone who is interested.
