Dear Colleagues
I was having a short discourse with Colin Reeves about geophysical history and he passed along this gem. Have a look at the link he provided as well. I wish you success with your researches into Hans Lundberg. I can't even imagine what it was like being a pioneer in his day! So I can't help you with any info, unfortunately. It is important that these early guys get the historical record they deserve. I learnt so much from Norm's book! A few years ago in Delft there was an event to remember Vening Meinesz. He is known for his pioneering work with gravity pendulum measurements made (1930s) in a submarine, all over the southern oceans, including the Indonesian trench. The organisers claimed he was better known in the wider world than in his home country! The event was held in the former Mining Institute (built in 1910), now used as a technology museum by the university. The geoscientists have been moved into a new wing of the Civil Engineering faculty. Mienesz's Geodesy department, meanwhile, has been disbanded and the fine 1890s building where he worked (with an astronomical observatory on its roof) is being renovated, probably as student accommodation. They used to keep Dutch standard time there, 40 mins behind Berlin and 20 mins ahead of Greenwich. I consider it a privilege that I can see the dome of the transit telescope from my bedroom window! http://www.reeves.nl/news/item/id/58 All the best, Colin. -- Earthworks Achterom 41A, 2611 PL Delft, The Netherlands. +31 611 35 6272 <http://www.reeves.nl%3chttp:/www.reeves.nl> www.reeves.nl<http://www.reeves.nl>
