The story of continental drift likely warrants such coverage but the lead film I found on the subject is not likely pitched the way you hoped for (image below). I read a summary of a multi-volume book collection on continental drift and there was an enormous element drama, human conflict mixed in with the science. Good grist for screen play. Prior to that, I’d suggest evolution of thinking regards the design of the solar system and the efforts of early scientists to buck the Catholic church likely could be considered in part a conflict around what we’d now consider “geophysical ideas” and certainly had all the required human interest elements; heated conflict, love and death which would make for good movie scripts. I strongly suspect movies of this era have already been made but with the geophysical content embedded in a fashion it would be difficult to consider it a geophysical story. Had the IP technique been developed a 100 years earlier than it was, I could envision Harry Seigel, a strong proponent of time domain IP, challenging Phil Halloff, an equality enthusiastic supporter of frequency domain IP, to pistols at dawn on the banks of the Humber River. Instead, as I recall from a few KEGS meetings in the 1980s, if the opportunity presented itself, they would take a dig at each other and then when the meeting finished, they’d join the stragglers for a few drinks at the pub. As far as a medium to convey the story, a play was first created around the issue of teaching evolution in the US from the 1920s (Inherit the Wind) and later produced as a movie. Possibly we could motivate a group to build a story around such themes as continental drift and present these as plays at our major conferences? Would this not be a great way to teach young people about science and history of geophysics? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scopes_Trial Ken From: Roger Henderson <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, August 4, 2019 1:52 AM To: [email protected] Cc: Ken Witherly <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [SEGMIN] The Prospector Ken, In my research for a paper on Tesla, I learnt that a movie has been made on the rivalry between George Westinghouse, who supported Tesla’s AC preference (motors, etc.), and Edison who pushed for DC. It is called “The Current War” and will be released in about September/ October. The actors are reasonably well known including Edison’s character played by Benedict Cumberbatch. Of course, there have been other movies for the general audience on prominent physicists (Hawkins) and mathematical geniuses (John Nash played by Russel Crowe) but have there been any others on famous geophysicists? Thanks to Rob Gordon, a short (about 20 minute) film of the exploration ‘cycle’ is outlined, including flying an airborne survey. It was produced in 1956. I was encouraged to see that the young lady in the second frame was geologist who did the initial background work on the claim that the prospector brought in. The file opens with Windows Media Player. The file is 900M and I will see if I can reduce the size next week. Its available ‘as is’ at the link below.
