Nope. Nothing for me there. They might be over-selling their capabilities and
possibilities a bit, but they're not proposing measuring new fields or
measuring to 100 times greater sensitivity or depth than anyone ever has, or
any of the other claims of voodoo geophysicists. There's no problem with their
theory, and no incomprehensible secrets.
If it fails, it will be on practical or commercial problems, like the viability
of hybrid air ships in such a close environment, or the percentage of "DART"
geophones that end up stuck in trees, on their side, or lying on soft ground.
(I wonder what their definition of "biodegradable" includes? 6 months? 60
years? After all, iron is "biodegradable", given enough time.) As Ken noted,
they weren't very clear on how they'll get their shots in: perhaps they'll need
so much ground access for sources that they might as well just plant geophones
while they are there.

Me again Ken,
Maybe Total should be careful. Are they fooling themselves? Remember what

Ken,
OK, I am in holiday mood, and retired so I found time to look at this
presentation with an open mind. I know I could be more dismissive if I was
stressed by work and short of time to view it. As you say it is a combination
of reality and SciFi but I would go for minimal Sci Fi. We have heard of
multiple drones spraying fields of sensors before (also for EM receivers). As I
understand, wireless pick-up is available. They are not claiming anything
impossible from the results, like gold at 10km., just a better way to acquire
standard seismic (as shown in the video).
They are however, guilty of making claims as yet unsubstantiated by any real
results. A first “small-scale pilot” study in the jungles of PNG, “reduced
apertures by a factor of 1 in 15”(?) and WILL be followed by an industrial
test…in 2021". Then an acquisition in the deserts of Abu Dhabi WILL take place
from late 2019 through early 2020”. Unless they have just not updated their
presentation.
TOTAL are not exactly a shonky company.
You have got me wanting to see their future developments.Thank you for sharing
it.
I agree that the video must have been expensive.

I agree with Rolf. Over the last couple of years I have seen new "developments"
in geophysics that include doing airborne work that result into maps with
metallic element concentrations, along with groundwater and hydrocarbons down
to 5km depth. Absolute BS but they seem to find people to pay for these
pseudo-studies.

Hmm …
I don’t think the same. If they are “into” using idioms, how about calling
their project FART. Fast Action Response Team.
Call the above my year-end thought … and all the best in the New Year to
everybody.

Dear Colleagues
Every once and a while we bump into something which gives us pause to realize
we don’t all think the same and some folks, well, are simply ‘out there’.
https://www.ep.total.com/en/innovations/research-development/metis-integrated-geophysical-acquisition-system-quality-real-time#.XgclejTifF8.email
The technical ideas are an interesting collection of current reality and
something you’d expect in a new NETFLIX SciFi release; all we need is a
maleficent AI program to get us all running for the control shed. The
biodegradable geophones are pretty cool but they seem to skirt discussing the
energy source; Kamikaze drones?
Just producing this video must have cost $0.5M.
With the closing hours of 2019, it gives us something to look forward to in
2020…
Best of the New Year/Ken
