Hi!

integrating video has been for a long time on my todo list. However, it is not such an 'easy' task...
So I have de-composed it into several sub-tasks:
- add support for multiple media streams per session.
- overhaul the Offer/Answer code (partly in AmSDP, partly in AmSession)
- add support for pass-through media (for example video)
- enhance the conferencing code to accept video, possibly with video mixing.

While speaking about video mixing, codecs, etc, there are several issues:
- h264 is the codec of choice, however, it is patended.
- h264 is also quite complex (requires a lot of CPU time).
- h263 is also patented, but algorithmically less complex (and supported by grandstream's entry level video phones).

IMO, the best and probably only way to support video in SEMS is to implement only pass-through. This avoids any codec related issues. Once this is done, we could integrate some video coding library, just to be able to offer support for encoding/decoding, thus avoiding any patent issues.

This is the existing roadmap so far. If you want to participate to this effort, please let me know.

Cheers,
Raphael.

You would have to write code into SEMS that can mix that kind of stream into a coherent whole from an algorithmic perspective, to the extent that video streams can be mixed that way (one big stream with many subwindows?)

Perhaps Stefan or someone else from IPtel can speak to this further. I have not attempted this kind of development.

What if we just start from using on codec, say h.264, going with RTP? Thanks in advance.

It depends on what the video codec is, whether it uses RTP as its bearer transport, etc.

Hi,

Thanks for the hint. Can you illuminate a little bit? Do we need to alter any in the core of sems? Simply treat video channels as voice channels will be enough?

Hi,

Does sems support video conference? If not, can anybody suggest how to have developers to start to develop it? Where should the video based code be
embedded in sems? What need to be done (what does the sems short of)?

No, sems doesn't support videoconference.
I you want to develop, you could extend the conference/webconference app to be able to mix video sources as well as audio sources, it's not an easy task.
