SML: Center console

Hey all... recently i have noticed on my way home from work (30 min. away) my 
center console  around my gear shifter(auto) and my e-brake gets very hot and 
it makes the inside of my car (91 E) very hot...   is this a common thing?  
could i take the plastic moldings off and put something under there to help 
it?? thanks for any input!
