JC Whitney sells heat-proofing padding for exactly this purpose. It goes
under the carpet and, if I remember correctly, it is pretty cheap, too. I've
never used it, so I don't know if it's any good or not. You could probably
go to a Home Depot or a Lowe's and find something that would work as well.
