you may have wear in the cylinder walls and the rings may be worn out due to 
improper oil changing or just wear from miles.  Cold startups in winter below 
20 degrees will affect wear because of no oil getting to the areas.  Valve 
seals tend to go bad, but the smoke dissapears after startup, just an 
innitial cloud and puff, then its OK.  The valve guide seals are the cause of 
this.  The only way to solve this is to use Engine Restore 4 cyl treatment if 
its the rings, valve seals will not be affected.  The CSL particles in the 
restore fill the scratches in the cyl walls and restore compression.  I used 
this in my old 86 E16 and it worked and I got new power, it doesn't last 
forever but it helped alot.
