Hi all..

hope this is the right list, and not some ridiculously duplicated question either.. -have to admit I'm a bit confused when I try to find some James archives.. I end up inside some jakarta or maybe it's a wiki confusion..

Anyhow, just to be sure, you can assume I'm just some wild-eyed hobbyist who wants to try out the James server with the current Apache/MySQL/php server that I've been playing around with too.

Window98/256m/non-commercial cable ISP account... -so I guess my "domain" is really something like 69.22.108.etc I only turn Apache on when I'm ready to try things out and on a few occasions I'll have a friend or 2 take a visit. And I'd like to try out the James system in the same fashion.

Upon running "run.bat" here is what I get in the dos box:
Out of environment space
Out of environment space
Required parameter missing
Using PHOENIX_HOME: C:\APACHE2\HTDOCS\JAMES\BIN
Using PHOENIX_TMPDIR:
Using JAVA_HOME: C:\J2SDK\BIN
Out of environment space
Bad command or file name

The James docs have the instruction about making the JAVA_HOME env-var so I added this line to my autoexec.bat:
set JAVA_HOME=C:\J2SDK\BIN

They didn't talk about PHOENIX other than to say that it's included with the package I downloaded, but I saw after trying the first run that it seemed to be missing something so I added another line in autexec.bat:
set PHOENIX_HOME=C:\APACHE2\HTDOCS\JAMES\BIN

-is this really it's home? I have no clue.. maybe it's C:\APACHE2\HTDOCS\JAMES\LIB

now of course maybe i need to go further and also add a:
set PHOENIX_TMPDIR=C:\APACHE2\HTDOCS\JAMES\TMPDIR

or even just:
set PHOENIX_TMPDIR=C:\TMPDIR

But, not being too knowledgable about dos I wonder if I'm barking up the wrong tree to try to do this. I see this "Out of environment space" message and so I'm wondering if maybe extended memory is involved in that? ahhh, who knows.. :) but I don't! -but also I'm not scared to delve around and hash it out if it's even possible. I remember seeing stuff years ago talking about old dos games under Windows and you can use a specific shortcut to dos to enable extra memory and such for the process. I'm not totally ignorant to all things.. -I have done alot of c/c++ programming over the years(skipped dos though.. -went from the Commodore64 to Win95).. -I'd prolly be considered some kind of Windows power-user(if there is such a thing;) BUT I sure don't have a clue as to where I should look next. hehe.. I'm a carpenter! It seems like I'm five levels into something and I barely know about the one layer that I'm interested in(James). I'm confused by the whole Avalon, Jakarta, Wiki, Phoenix thing... I just saw what James is about from the Apache Foundation site and went with it.. -so here I am. I want to do email..

I'm finding myself now looking into installing Pheonix.. and I'm reading some installation instruction on some Jakarta stuff that's talking about Wiki but it really seems to be talking about James.. I don't know, I'm following links around and seeing conflicting instructions for installation.. One says you only need the JAVA_HOME envar and the other says you want all 3. As far as I can gather I need to do the [1. firstrun(install)] [2. shutdown] [3. config] [4. restart] process. And that's my approach but I'm stuck at #1 so far. Heck, I'd just like to find SOMETHING to get working.. maybe I end up deleting half of the hard drive or corrupting the registry beyond repair or SOMETHING... I'd just like to get SOMETHING happening.. hehe.. -that even rational?

And uh, I doubt I have a DNS server on this machine, and I don't even know what an MX record is..

Any suggestions?

Or, maybe I should just ask, "Is it even possible to do what I'm trying to do here by installing James in such a temporary fashion for a hobbyist's playtime environment".

Thank you anybody who would be willing to make an offering for me,
good day,
Scott
