Know this is open source, and if you want something done, feel free to do so.
Not to be too cynical here, but this is really bad feedback coming back from a development team. All the projects I've had the displeasure of dealing with that have stated: "This is open-source, what more do you expect?" have ultimately delivered terrible products because they believed exactly what they were saying. The best open-source products I've worked with were backed up by an enthusiastic development team.
James is extremely stable and functional in its niche, and doesn't have a lot of active development. Download it, start it, configure it, and you've got a decent no-IMAP, all-Java mail server. We know there is potential we are not reaching, but what we have is what we have, not necessarily what we want.
If you are someone who wants to build from source without using the source download or read the dev mailing list traffic, well (perhaps unfortunately), we ask that you take the next few steps on your own.
I encourage anyone who does want to do this to spend a few minutes reading through dev mailing list posts from the past couple of months, and he or she would be in a good position to contribute.
