I am so so sorry!. This is entirely my mistake. Since, I have cygwin in my path, when I run 'servicemix servicemix.xml', it ends up calling the shell 'servicemix' , instead of the servicemix.bat. I tried running 'setrvicemix.bat servicemix.xml' and the soap example is working fine.
