We also are using the IBM MQSeries Client for Java to connect to our OS/390 mainframe
with the servlets/webserver on the NT side. The neat thing about MQ is that it is an
assured delivery mechanism between the two system.
If you want to look at the IBM MQSeries Client for Java, it's available at
http://www.software.ibm.com/ts/mqseries/txppacs/ma5q.html
The support pack includes all the code and documentation, including the code for the
EBCDIC to ASCII conversions data stream conversions.

I don't know of any Java interface to IMS but we use IBM MQSeries to talk to
IMS programs from servlets on NT and AIX. We haven't tried the WebSphere for
OS/390 yet, but it is on my list of things to do. There is a Java interface
to MQ on OS/390.
