FWIW, here's my experience.

A lot of possible hosters don't seem to have heard of servlets.
Those that have have been very helpful.

I faffed quite a bit getting my first one to run remotely.

This was mainly because
- the server was Apache
- I had moved to Java2
- Apache with Servlet support is not that far forward in a stable form yet
(apparently).

As a stop gap I recompiled my servlet(s) on the hoster's machine (a somewhat
humbling command line experience from 12000 miles away !) but all went fine.

I thunk the quality of hoster support can be predicted from the quality and
enthusiasm of first response when you initially approach them.
