Actually, I think this delay is exaggerated beyond proportion. Picky
users can always learn a bit more about their browser or ask around to
find out how to start their VM when they start their browser in the
first place:-)
The time it takes to load current generation browsers even when the
browser 'vendor' knows all the OS hacks -since they make both, and the
Internet latency is too much more, for VM load time to make any
difference or even for class download time, provided someone that
understands a few things of the Web has written them and packed them
nicely in a jar file.
I've tested a quite complex applet interface (so complex I had to design
my own LayoutManager and download that on top of all) with medium
processing capabilities on the client. Most real work was done on the
server. Sometimes, it took more time (38 seconds) to be loaded in the
next office, than to travel up all Europe from South Greece to Denmark
(22 seconds).
