I agree completely. I much prefer the 1.2 collections to Hashtable and
Vector.

Oops, I missed that. How long ago was it? (I'd like to go check the
archives.)

I understand that. My biggest concern was the requirement for 1.2.
Right now, it is possible to develop and run servlets on a wide
variety of platforms, including Mac, BSD and some embedded systems. I
think the last is an important area for servlets, as many standalone
devices are now configured using HTTP/HTML. Supporting servlets is a
powerful addition to that.
But if servlets move to JDK 1.2 only, none of that will work. The
number of platforms (not installed base) that support 1.2 robustly is
tiny. You can count them on your fingers.
That is not platform independence. It is barely even vendor
independent.
