It was ages ago - 2 years ago?

That's not a reason not to do it.

Here are the reasons for doing it IMHO

1.Some of the things we're trying to do in servlet 2.3 are dependant
on Collections. These things are all long overdue.

If we had to wait for a version 3.0 it would be a long time before we
fixed these problems.

When would a version 3.0 come out? Sun has no plans (AFAIK) to start
work on a major revision. It could be 5 years away.

2. Servlet-2.2 engines that do no require JDK 1.2 will still be
around - they're not going to go away (particularly Tomcat which is
the reference and so can't go away).

3. Lastly I think you over state the case about the lack of JDK1.2
compatability. There are quite a few JVMs out there offering JDK1.2.
There are even good free-software/open-source JVMs that support JDK1.2
for embedded apps (eg: Kaffe).
