I've been thinking about this lately too, albeit from a different
perspective. Perhaps with an evolution of the listserv concept? On many
large lists people complain about the traffic...some of it being too basic
etc etc, and the listserv loses people that might otherwise be valuable
community members. I also think that the current listserv is lacking as it
does not effectively build and enhance a knowledge base. Archives are so
inefficient. It seems to me the idea of combining threaded discussions and
the listserv concept might be beneficial. For example, using the Sun
Servlet list as an example, one might have a Servlet category, then groups
within, i.e. Beginners and then threads within that group. Users can view
online or subscribe to groups to have threaded messages delivered by email,
in full or digest. The messages remain online for archive purposes, and
integrated with a decent Java search engine could be really snazzy. The
idea could be extended into building a knowledge base with integration to
other components such as FAQ and Help Desk solutions. Or to even integrating
with content management for resource context sensitive forums etc.

If you like the idea of combining the discussion forum and listserv
features, would you consider getting involved in a project underway? As you
might know we have an open source (OSS) eForum project at
www.javacorporate.com and recently released version 1.1. This project is
listed in both Jars Top 5% and Dave Central's Best of Linux award. In
addition to being discussion forum software, we are currently using this
solution onsite for our project listservs since users can when they
subscribe to a forum group, can specify to have messages emailed to them.
This got me initially thinking that additional listserv capability was
ideally suited to be added.
The site is strongly oriented around collaborative development from the
developer and reseller/ASP/ISP community. If you or anyone on this list
would be interested in getting involved, please let me know, now or when you
have some idle time ;). The project is at:
http://www.javacorporate.com/components/helpdesk/jsp/projframe.jsp?category=
70 (please get full url; you may need to copy and paste).
Recently, a lot of work was done to our eSearch, search engine (which is
onsite in CVS) and we have plans to integrate into eForum and our other apps
which would make eForum that much more a powerful tool.
Happy Holidays
