Out of topic Question : credit card processing

I am not sure how to get to the archive so, I am how to search it.  can someone send me the link to it so I can look there.  I am trying to research e-commerce transaction architecture, I want to use credit cards and don't know if I need a gateway like verisign or if I can go right to the merchant account, and program my own validation and security.     Regards,   Travis D.
