I have an IDSL connection thru Speakeasy and it works flawlessly.
They only have to use 1 pair of wires and depending on where you
are, may multiplex it onto your existing voice line (mine is a
separate line installed before Verizon started line sharing).

2 things to watch out for, does your provider give you a fixed IP
address or some flavor of dynamic allocation? If it's dynamic, you
may have trouble with STN. Also be prepared to have the installer
connect the line to a Windows box as many ISP's TOS prohibit the use
of NAT boxes (plus the installer will have no clue what to do and
may actually refuse to complete the install).

While 144k may not seem like a big jump from 56k, remember that you
actually get 144k not the 52k or less that a 56k line really delivers.
With standard compression, I get reliable 18Kb thruput. Plus "always
on" is just such a huge improvement! I'm jealous of the $50 cost, here
in New England I'm paying $95/month for the same thing (though I do
get 3 IP addresses and a bunch of email addresses plus an ISP who not
only doesn't restrict what I do on the connection, but actually has a
clue!)
