Me again. Thanks for all your input, everyone. Thought I'd clarify a few
aspects of my situation:

1) The inaccessible site is not on either of the two lans -- it is in fact
hosted by the ISP providing service to the two lans.

2) The two lans are not connected to each other at all, nor does the
customer want them connected. VPN's are not happening here.

3) It appears very much like IE is timing out; the results are identical to
what I would expect when typing in an invalid URL.

4) This particular ISP appears to be using virtual hosting or something --
when I traceroute the website from my own net, I get a particular IP
address, but when I access that address directly through Internet Explorer I
get a different web site. So, I don't think I can use a HOSTS file entry.

Next time I'm onsite I'll try using a different DNS and see what happens.

Subject: [ShareTheNet] Certain sites not available through STN?

I'm a technician at a computer sales and services company where we've sold a
number of STN installs to very satisfied customers. However, here's an odd
problem which I'll throw up for general discussion, since I can't quite fit
my head around it myself.

I have a customer who is unable to access his corporate web site
(http://www.ashlandtrn.com) from any computer on his office LAN, which is
behind an STN box. In fact, he has two LANs having this problem, each
connected by STN (two STN boxes running two different versions of STN).

The suspect STN boxes are connected to kootenay.net, a local ISP. I have
non-STN customers also using kootenay.net who have no trouble accessing the
page in question. In addition, I have another customer running STN, using a
different ISP, who is able to access this particular page with no trouble
whatsoever.

Other sites which I've tried accessing from behind the suspect STN boxes
appear to be available. Could there be something peculiar about this
particular ISP? I think STN goes directly to Internic (or whatever they're
calling themselves this week) for its DNS queries. Is it possible that the
host ISP has something wrong with its DNS tables? (Though why that wouldn't
affect everyone else is beyond me.)

I'm fresh out of ideas. I would appreciate any suggestions as to what I can
try next.
