The 1989 Turbo Trans Am did use the GN engine, and final assembly was done at PAS, who built the Syclones/Typhoons, leading to the misconception that the trucks also used the Buick mill.
Syclone/Typhoon engine is entirely different from the GN engine. 90 degree block vs 60 degree, even fire/odd fire, liquid intercooler vs. air/air, etc. Syclone engines were quicker in as-delivered trim, but GNs can be tweaked more before breaking expensive stuff. Frankly, having owned, and using at various times for daily driving, a Syclone, a GLHS, and now a Typhoon, the GLHS is much more fun and in a crappier package, which should have put it at the top position on that list.
