You don't have cruise, right? Those retrofit kits used two piece cables.
The cable isn't twisted or bent too tightly? Have you changed the speed sensor? Is the cable properly lubricated? Sounds like cable is binding up causing the bouncing and eventual failure. As for the over heating, if you have the timing off it can overheat. A lean condition will also cause excessive heat. Check the oxygen sensor and coolant temp sensor. How old is the exhaust? My dad chased a similar problem on his t2 tona. He upgraded the exhaust, etc. Eventually he had the radiator rebuilt not just "rodded" out. One final thought, have you checked the fan's rotation? Some have run into incorrectly wired fans that cause weird problems like this. Good luck!
