I have no answer to the shifter passing the position where it is supposed to
be, but since most synchronized manual transmissions work in a very similar
fashion, I can say with experience that a transmission that is low on oil can
just decide to almost randomly pop out of gear. Had this happen on a Spirit
R/T on the drive home after I bought it and also a friend with a Ford Escort
GT. Don't ask me how it happens, but filling them with oil fixed it. In each
case, it was 5th gear, and after extended highway driving. A few thousand
miles later, the transmission in the Escort suddenly grenaded a 1st gear
synchronizer ring at highway speeds in 5th gear. All the friction from no oil
distorted the input shaft to the point that I was unable to even remove the
gears to get to the synchronizer. That transmission basically was basically
toast.
