This is such a common problem and I'm very sorry for the trouble. So glad that you came to the list and are sticking with it. These bug reports are essential to the future stompings of Shoes. First off, there is a slightly newer installer you can try: <http://code.whytheluckystiff.net/dist/shoes-0.r351-intel-novideo.dmg> I should have another new build out within a day or two. Secondly, you are installing into Applications, right? Are you running from the commandline or clicking on the icon? Unfortunately, the Shoes tarball is geared toward Linux only, building from source on OS X is a bit arduous and must be done from a checked-out copy of trunk.
