First thing I'd do is go to the Adobe site and be sure I was using the 
latest greatest version, and the full boat one at that.  Over the years, 
I've found that not all functionality is found in all versions of Acrobat 
Reader.  I know for a fact that there are two current versions with 
differing search capabilities.

FWIW, I doubt a real problem with the printer.  Assuming you're not using a 
dot matrix printer, there is no real difference between printing PDF and 
plain text.
