but if I get a head from a supplier and it has sticky residue in the hosel,

This only indicates that the "installation residue" of  mouse glue was not removed. Call the supplier, pay freight back and they send you a head that they had one of their people inspect and clean out the residue.  When your returned head come back they clean out the residue and reship it to someone else.  They then make a note on your account card that you are a PIA (pain in a$$) and never offer you any better prices. Pester them enough and any product you order is "out of stock" until you stop calling to order. Why go to the extra trouble, just use some acetone on a paper stick Q-Tip and clean it out yourself!  Ask your suppliers if their heads are filled with mouse glue and expect an answer of "I donno" or "huh" or some bull like "not any more - you must have gotten one from an older shipment".

Personally I find "mouse glue" a messy product to use.  When a rattle repair comes in I disassemble the club, usually shake out the rattle or remove in another way, reassemble and collect the money. It's what I am here to do.

Also, most rattles are caused by careless assembly (pushed the plug into the head) or too much epoxy, dried out foam fill, etc.
