Acetone will work but DO NOT use in on any plastic items, ferrels ect.  Same goes for laquer thinner.

Since you mentioned Goo-gone, that was one of the products I used. I think back and now realize that I probably should have used an old toothbrush to clean it because these graphite shaft extenders are ribbed in the area that goes into the butt-end of the shaft. So it is quite possible that I may have been using the right products, just not the right method.
