Graham, I haven't done any wooden head since I started my business a couple of years ago, but Back in the day, (60's - 70's) when I did this I used a soldering iron to heat the screws before attempting to turn them. Back then the screws were epoxied in and the heat helped break the epoxy bond and made them easier to remove.
