It could happen! The patent search revels that someone named "The Almighty" failed to renew the material part of his patent. The lead weight part is banned as a dangerous product and the soleplate material got no mention.
Go for it!
As for the current weight screw systems only component companies would create "knockoffs" with inferior materials. The Proline guys wouldn't copy anything. All ideas are the result of years of R&D, careful selection of materials and skillful advertising writers who get the true story to the buying public.
