This discussion sounds like the many customers who brought in their clubs and requested that I measure and record their lofts and lies.I would always answer with the question"what will you do with this information?" Mostly they just want to know if their clubs are "up to specs" of the manufacturer. Usually the customer tries to blame out of spec clubs for score failures. I would always have the customer use the 5 iron on a lie board. Look at the sole scuffs and adjust the lie angle until the scuffs were centered, then adjust the loft to the club spec and recheck the lie angle. Now place masking tape on the club face , have the customer hit three balls. Usually the strike marks were all sweet spot (that's another story). From that point the rest of the irons would be adjusted, face taped, 3 ball strikes, etc. Never had a customer ever again question the loft and lie angles. If they ever brought in the same clubs and wanted adjustments back to my previous bends I would explain that they had to go through the same routine. This entire procedure would take about 30 minutes and I never took clubs for adjustment to what a customer wanted done without the "test". " My pro said I " should get these adjusted 1 degree up" UP FROM WHAT? The industry "pros" often don't know up from down! Who the hell cares what your club specs are - do they work properly for you?

I’ve always been under the impression that you cannot use a “bending machine” to take accurate loft lie measurements. You were to do adjustments on the machine, then use a club gauge to test the “real” loft and lie of the final product. Is this correct? Thanks for the help!
