OK, thanks Tom, that is a useful clarification, I'll stick with that strategy.

this is a bit problematic though -  the source tarball location is one
piece of information that we put in the RPMs - it is useful for things
like the lookaside caching, and auditing of packages etc. It's really
helpful to have a clear and obvious audit trail from a package as
installed to the upstream sources.
