Peter, Shotwell doesn't use the locale's setting since we've chosen our own date format which we think looks simpler and easier to read (e.g. "Tue Jun 29, 2010"). It's true that with our date format the numbers don't line up vertically in neat columns since we begin with an abbreviated day of the week, which always has 3 characters but whose width may vary in a variable-width font. We could consider allowing the user to customize the date format we display; feel free to file a ticket for this if you like.
