Hello Daniele.
While I don't share all of your views, I agree that some design
decisions for SHR (which is the only OS I use on my FR) are at the
momemnt contra-performance.
Still, most of these are currently also only prototyped applications
written in python, which is by definition not fast.
For my applications (fltkworldclock, fltkhackdiet and currently
developing fltkcocktailbar) I use as the name suggests C and fltk for
the GUI which also shows in startup times of "almost instantly" to "up
to 1 second", depending on amount of data.
While I think that startup time of the OS is irrelevant (I don't reboot
my phone several times a day), I see that people always get into a fight
over X.org vs directfb.
Why don't you just try to replace it?
As a last point, I agree that the interface on a handheld computer with
only a stylus and no hardware keyboard (even with hardware keyboard)
must be very different from an interface on a Desktop machine.
I've been developing applications for the Palm V "back in the days"
around 2005 and today I'm developing my third application for the FR.
That being said, there are many more programs written for the Desktop
than for a handheld device. Many of these programs would _have_ to be
reinvented to have a usable interface on the FR. And unless someone
starts paying me 50k Euro or someone else his/her price a year for
doing so, it'll be a scratch-your-own-back experience.
So if you start your own distribution, you'll probably get a lot of
testers, some bug reporters and a handful of supporters, just as many
other projects.
Or you can adapt SHR to use directfb and write small programs that do
what you want them to do, after all, if I understand the SHR
architecture correctly, much communication is done by dbus and as such
interchangable.
Kind regards,
Benjamin
