Hi everyone,

It's heartening to see that the list and community surrounding VP is
still alive, in spite of my (obviously conspicuous) absence lately.

Let me assure all of you, including Bob, that I am not playing some
kind of game. What kind of game would that be, and for what purpose?
For me, VP is a hobby, and not one that makes me any money. I am in
it purely for the pleasure of it, as most of you seem to have grasped.

The truth of the matter is that I simply haven't had the time to
devote to VP I did in the past. I wish I did, but I don't, and my
wife-to-be and job (that pays for my butter) have to take
precedence. Those who think this is unacceptable and that I need to
pull myself together are free to unsubscribe from this list and to
find alternative tools to pursue their respective hobbies or
professions. One thing is for certain: I am not doing VP in order to
get a lot of grief.

Having said all that, I still occasionally do some work on VP although
it is mostly bugfixing and minor fixes. Implementing a sleuth of new
features is interesting but is also very time consuming and is not
something I will have time to do in the near future. What I will
consider doing instead is making available select parts of the VP
source code to some of you that have contributed in the past and
clearly still have an interest; hopefully this can make things happen
faster than if I do it alone... I'll keep you posted on this.

Finally, I've received several letters regarding integrating the VP
compiler (and possibly debugger) in the Sibyl graphical IDE. It's
not a new idea though; I have previously spoken to SpeedSoft (back
when they were alive) about doing this as well. Again, this is by no
means a small project as the design philosophies (as well as more
tangible things like the RTL and compiler design) differ radically
between the two products. As such, I am not sure it is worth the
effort involved.

To me, VP is an excellent tool for developing console applications. If
I need to develop a graphical app, I use Delphi or Kylix, which work
just fine for that purpose and have large development teams behind
them. Writing and maintaining a cross-platform graphical run-time
library that is able to support Windows and Linux at least, and
possibly OS/2 as well, is unfortunately not a task I want to take on.
Compared to doing this, getting VP's compiler and debugger to work
inside Sibyl is probably simple, but again I cannot help but ask why
it might be worth the effort... Maybe I've missed something?

Thanks for listening :)
Allan

PS: Having just said I don't play games I must admit it is a white
lie. I greatly enjoy playing boardgames (Titan, Settlers, Acquire,
Shark, Gipf, Dvonn, etc) and do so regularly - but I'm not sure
this is what Bob had in mind :)

PPS: Note the spelling: it's Allan, not Allen ;-)

Or GPC. But no OS/2 version. FPC seems to be more active. But many required APIs
not declared yet.

Ok. Let's make to do list. My version:

1. Drop-away Sibyl RTL (Use only as example)
2. Add required declaration to FPC RTL
3. Adopt SPCC for FPC RTL
4. Adopt VPDE for FPC SPCC

As concurrent task:
1. Check current SPCC and fix bugs (using SPC25)
2. Extend SPCC to be more Delphi/Kylix compartible.
3. Add new features to VPDE/SPCC.

Major task is compiled SPCC under FPC RTL.

PS: I like gpc, but too many work.

Bye.
