Okay, guys. Finally got it working with a bit of information that Steve Farabee
provided. I was trying to get it to work this weekend but that was with a login
script that is different than ours. Some markets have the Toshiba system, while
here in Austin a Motorola system is used. They are not compatible.
Go here:
http://hoku.net/projects/
then go to rrlogin and it'll look like some FTP-type browsing of files via the
web. You want to get the file: rrlogin-0.1.tgz
If you are installing RedHat 5.1, it automatically has the DHCP daemon as well
as the Kerberos MD5 authentication perl file.
Next, enter the following information for
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 (assuming you have an ethernet card
at eth0 that is connected to your Mot CableModem). and enter the following
information:
DEVICE=eth0
IPADDR= NETMASK=255.255.255.0
NETWORK= BROADCAST= BOOTPROTO=dhcp
If you want the card to get its IP address on bootup, you'd also enter this
line: ONBOOT=yes
I got this information from:
http://www.fammed.ohio-state.edu/shane/rr but they don't use the same
authentication scheme so only certain parts of that page apply.
Next, per the README file included in the tarred archive above, you'll need to
"make" the perl script with appropriately-entered values for USERNAME and
PASSWORD.
After successfully "make"ing the file, you'll also need to go to line 54 and
change the "sms1" to "sms-server". THIS is ESSENTIAL or it won't work.
I'll assume that you know how to edit the appropriate entry in
/etc/rc.d/rc.local to run this script at boottime (if you have DHCP
automatically run on bootup).
If you don't want to reboot, and your ethernet card is correctly detected, next
thing to do is to simply shut down the networking on the ethernet card (just in
case), and start it up again.
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifdown eth0
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup eth0
For me, dhcpd took a number of seconds to obtain the IP address as well as
other stuff that'll go in /etc/dhcpc/hostinfo-eth1 and /etc/dhcpc/resolv.conf
as well as in /etc/resolv.conf
Next, simply run the script as follows:
[root@(none) rrlogin-0.1]# ls
COPYING Makefile README rrlogin rrlogin.pl
[root@(none) rrlogin-0.1]# ./rrlogin

You can now browse the web, etc. to your heart's content with Linux!
Any related suggestions/comments/etc. are welcome.
