Hey, I'm not real sure from your description but this sounds like
it might be a problem I and a few others have had where somehow X falls
out out of sync with it's config files or something bizarre like that.
Try running XF86Config (say no to use prev data) or XConfigurator or
whatever the other program was called, if this is indeed what is
happening. (Would you be getting a text term even if your vid card was
blown?) Sorry I can't be more helpful, I know an Xless existence is
painful. ;^)
