ok, so you want 1280x1024@32bpp?
make sure that in /etc/X11/XF86Config looks like this:

Section "Screen"
    Driver "svga"
Device <identifer used in the device section>
Monitor <identifer used in the monitor section>
    Subsection "Display"
        Depth 32
        Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" "640x400"
        ViewPort 0 0
    EndSubsection
EndSection

then when you startx -- -bpp 32 you should be able to cycle using
Ctl+Alt+plus/minus to get to 1280x1024. but if your monitor supports
it it should go right to it anyway.
hope this helps.
