You may want to add a "Virtual x y" line to specify how big you
want your virtual desktop (usually as large as video ram permits.)
Colordepth will not affect the possible resolutions, but it will influance
refresh rate and video ram.
If you want a virtual desktop of, say, 1600x1200, you have
1600x1200x4(bytes/pixel) = 7500k, so it'll fit in an 8meg video card (and
you have 16 or 32.) So have a much bigger virtual desktop if you want. But
this is independant of resolution.
With the Riva's, there's another twist: you can use the sorta-beta
hardware-gl acceleration. Trick is that it's only supported at 15/16 bit
color. So have a second "Subsection Display" up there, with Depth 15 or
16, and set the resolutions at whatever you feel is fast enough, and
probebly the virtual resolution at the same size.

So then use "startx -- -bpp 32" for your working desktop, and
"startx -- -bpp 16" to fire up QuakeII/III/IV/V/...
If you like, and aren't worried about hardware locking up your
video card, run two X servers at the same time on different terminals.
Using different colordepths tends to trash my Riva128, and only power
reset will cycle it. Presumebly GGI/KGI/fbdev/whatever will fix this one
day.
Ok, that was probebly more than you want to know, but I suspect
there's a lot of Riva users out there not using the full power of their
cards.
