New user here. not sure if my input matters.
I am a big supporter of open source hard and software, and I am a long time
open source user.
And I in support of a open-source hardware logic analyzer.
The problem I describe below is not only for logic analyzers, you see it
for all closed hardware (cameras, laptops, graphics cards, ... ).
Here is the problem with closed hardware:
- Some hardware manufacture creates new and fancy hardware that is
completely closed.
- The community tries to reverse engineer how this device works to
implement a open driver.
- Finally the community gets the open driver working.
- By this time the device is unsupported, old or obsolete.
- The hardware manufacture make a new and improved device and it starts all
over again.
In this scenario nobody is happy.
not the community developer, he has a lot of work to do and by the time he
is done the device is unsupported, old or obsolete.
not the user he has to wait a long time for the device to be supported or
use the closed software.
not the hardware manufacture, because he does not want his product reverse
engineered.
In most cases there is not much we can do about this problem. making open
hardware is not trivial.
I do not expect a open source graphics card any time soon.
But a logic analyzer might be feasible.
I see a lot of smart people in the sigrok community and I think that they
are capable of making a nice device.
This I my view, Let me know what you think, Am I wrong?
P.s.
If I offend some developers by describing the problem, It is not my intend,
the problem lies with the manufactures not you.
Kr,
Mathias
