What a fun project. :) How about Scholastique Mukasonga's novel, Our Lady of the Nile? Originally written in French. English translations available. It is set in a boarding school in Rwanda in the years leading up to the genocide. I enjoyed it very much.
Also Celestial Bodies by Jokha Alharthi. Set in Oman across different decades in the 20th century. The translation won the Man Booker International a few years ago.
