Great idea! Restricting my list to those books bought since 2019. Will send more when I remember them.
1) Poland: Drive your plow over the bones of the dead by by Olga Tokarczuk <https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/296560.Olga_Tokarczuk> , Antonia Lloyd-Jones <https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/487465.Antonia_Lloyd_Jones> (Translator) Written by the Nobel prize winner it is described as " A deeply satisfying thriller cum fairy tale" https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/51648276-drive-your-plow-over-the-bones-of-the-dead 2) Ireland: The Searcher by Tana French, an Irish 'Western' written by one of my favourite writers. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/52661162-the-searcher?from_search=true&from_srp=true&qid=a9XhHoX3DP&rank=2 3) Russia(!): A Swim in a Pond in the Rain: In Which Four Russians Give a Master Class on Writing, Reading, and Life by George Saunders A deeply satisfying read into the art and craft of writing by the Russian greats. But it also contains the stories which we can just read and leave as it is. This is also a book written by an American, so may not qualify. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/53487237-a-swim-in-a-pond-in-the-rain?from_search=true&from_srp=true&qid=OZMz9fZUEd&rank=3 4) South Africa: Born A Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood by Trevor Noah. Deeply satisfying memoir, and a great education on how race differs in South Africa from the US, and also lots of parallels with India. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/29780253-born-a-crime 5) Libya: The Return: Fathers, Sons, and the Land in Between by Hicham Matar Another brilliant memoir/investigation by a man whose father disappeared into Gadaffi's prisons for 22 years. After the liberation of Libya, the son returns looking for his father. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/28007895-the-return?from_search=true&from_srp=true&qid=TzEM7nZqDg&rank=1 And because I'm thinking of Ukraine, but can't think of a book by a Ukranian author, so I will (controversially) choose a Russian writer — 6) Lights On The River by N Dubov -- My father's favourite book when he was a child, and I too came under its spell. It tells the story of a young Russian boy who goes to Kyiv for his summer break to be with his uncle, a buoy-keeper, and has a bunch of adventures. Coming of age story with some Soviet propaganda no doubt. Don't know if copies are easily available. More on N Dubov: https://en.wikidark.org/wiki/Nikolai_Dubov *Nikolai Ivanovich Dubov* (1910–1983) was a Soviet Russian <https://en.wikidark.org/wiki/Soviet_Russian> children's writer <https://en.wikidark.org/wiki/Children%27s_writer>. He was born in Omsk <https://en.wikidark.org/wiki/Omsk> and moved permanently to Kiev <https://en.wikidark.org/wiki/Kiev> in 1944 where he spent the rest of his life. He was one of several Russian-speaking writers there who were occasionally referred to as the "Kiev School". Others in the group included V.P. Nekrasov <https://en.wikidark.org/wiki/V.P._Nekrasov>, L.N. Volynsky <https://en.wikidark.org/w/index.php?title=L.N._Volynsky&action=edit&redlink=1>, and M.N. Parkhomov <https://en.wikidark.org/w/index.php?title=M.N._Parkhomov&action=edit&redlink=1>. Dubov gained enormous popularity through his children's stories, the most successful of which were turned into popular films, notably Огни на реке (Lights on the River <https://en.wikidark.org/wiki/Lights_on_the_River>, 1953) and Какое оно, море? (1965, based on the story "Boy by the Sea"). They were also translated for international distribution.[1] <https://en.wikidark.org/wiki/Nikolai_Dubov#cite_note-1> On Sun, Feb 27, 2022 at 10:09 AM Udhay Shankar N via Silklist < [email protected]> wrote: > One book that may fit into this is Peter Colaco's collection of anecdotes >> about the old Bangalore Cantonment. >> > > It is described as "a sequence of loosely connected essays and anecdotes. > It often borders on social comment, might even pass as pop-sociology" > > https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/13579178-bangalore > _______________________________________________ > Silklist mailing list > Manage your membership here: > https://lists.digeratus.in/postorius/lists/silklist.lists.digeratus.in/ -- *Get your 'vaccine' from 'fake news', lies, half-truths, manipulated truths, propaganda and general B.S. at my media buddhi newsletter <https://mediabuddhi.substack.com/>.* H R Venkatesh Director, Training and Research, BOOM <https://www.boomlive.in/> Twitter: @hrvenkatesh
