Great endeavour! Tried doing this a few years ago, read a few and the
project got derailed. Glad to tag along with you as the recommendations
come in.

My favourites from when I was reading -
1. Disgrace, J M Coetzee
2. Eva Luna,  Isabel Allende
3. Night Train to Lisbon, Pascal Mercier
4. Alive and Clicking, TS Satyan

Alive and Clicking won my heart, as I read it as a 20-something year old.
Its a book on people and places through the lens of the famous cameraman, T
S Satyan. In all it's simplicity, it showed a world to me that was so
diverse and yet gave me the feeling of belonging to a tribe.
