Camera (and lenses) do get firmware updates. But in my experience, they are
of the bug (and vulnerability) fixing type. At least that was the case when
I used to pay more attention. None of the firmware updates I ever applied
to my camera bodies were of the type that added new features.

Take just one feature, for example. Many modern camera bodies support
Bluetooth. It should be easy to retroactively add a feature to a camera
body to grab the GPS coordinates from a nearby paired phone (possibly this
might require an app to be running on the phone). Back in the days when i
was paying attention, the Nikons and the Canons did not do this, instead
hawking a few thousand special purpose GPS dongle to attach to the camera
bodies instead.
