Maybe the society shouldn't be burdened with the costs of
an (uninsured) vegetable for 2-3 years.

As long as the society doesn't pick up the costs of head
trauma patients, the state shouldn't. My motto is:
go ahead, get yourself killed, but don't expect us
to pay for it. Since this isn't an option, you'd
better not get yourself killed, and wear a damned
helmet.
