Helmets should be optional at home, but everyone should be required wear one
while riding a motorcycle.

India is still too backward a country for even educated people to appreciate
the economic cost and social consequences of not wearing helmets. These
things were sussed out long ago in developed countries.

Having said that the medical community in India too is really primitive
because the number of brain dead but otherwise healthy young people in post
accident ICUs is high in India but the damn doctors are not harvesting as
many hearts, lungs and kidneys for transplant as they should.

One former classmate of mine supervises about 100 heart transplants a year in
the UK and another performs at least one liver transplant a week in the US.
In all these years Indians in India have performed maybe half a dozen of
these operations in total.

The people may be dumb - but their doctors are worse.
