Since I had trouble understanding this question, I figured I'd
rephrase it using terms I'm more familiar with.

    If spaniels are dogs and dogs are mammals, what
    differentiates "non spaniel dogs" from "spaniel dogs"?  How
    does one look at a dog and say "This is a spaniel" or "This
    is not a spaniel".

The answer is obvious.  You check if it has droopy ears.
