I've been wondering the same thing myself. Pre-integrated home
theatres seem to be an order of magnitude cheaper. I'm not an audio
geek, so I have no idea about the pros and cons.

One worry is that a lot of the cheaper consumer home theatres have a a
combined DVD + AV Receiver thingy. My gut feel is the DVD player may
become obsolete quickly -- rendering the whole thing useless.

The higher end ones that have a separate AV Receiver are fairly
expensive. I wonder if I spend a little more and buy low-end
audiophile gear I'd get a better system.

Of course, that violates my rule of thumb that any price point for any
product the best deal is high end of the lower product segment.
