One worry is that a lot of the cheaper consumer home theatres have a a
combined DVD + AV Receiver thingy. My gut feel is the DVD player may
become obsolete quickly -- rendering the whole thing useless.

The higher end ones that have a separate AV Receiver are fairly
expensive. I wonder if I spend a little more and buy low-end
audiophile gear I'd get a better system.

For your set of requirements, I'd recommend one of the newer "Home Theater in a Box" solutions - some excellent deals to be had there, with pretty good sound too.

Here's an example:

Your best bet is to buy this stuff in Singapore, during the end-of-year discounting period. The money you save will *more* than pay for your trip, assuming you buy a reasonable amount of stuff.
